प्रदूषण आज की आधुनिक समस्याओं में सबसे शिखर पर विराजमान है। यह धरती से लेकर आकाश तक फैला हुआ है और द्रव्य की तीनों अवस्थाओं में भी फैला हुआ है। ठोस अवस्था में मनुष्यों द्वारा फेंके गए कूड़ा कचरा, भू क्षरण और मृदा प्रदूषण जैसी अनेक समस्याएं शामिल है। इसी प्रकार द्रव अवस्था में जल प्रदूषण तथा गैस अवस्था में वायु प्रदूषण। इसके अलावा ध्वनि प्रदूषण भी चर्चा का विषय है।

इन सारे प्रदूषण की मुख्य वजह इंसान की बढ़ती अनावश्यक इच्छाओं और उद्योगपतियों द्वारा अपने मुनाफे के लिए उन इच्छाओं की पूर्ति के लिए प्रकृति का गला घोंटना है। हर रोज लाखों बच्चे इन प्रदूषण के कारण बढ़ती बीमारियों के चपेट में आ रहे है फिर भी इससे किसी की आंखे नही खुलती। जंगलों को रौंद कर कांक्रीट जंगल बनाया जा रहा है, करोड़ों टन हानिकारक गैसें रोज पर्यावरण में उत्सर्जित होती हैं जीनके कारण ओजोन परत का क्षरण हो रहा है और धरती का तापमान लगातार बढ़ते जा रहा है। वैज्ञानिकों का अनुमान है की अगर उचित कदम न उठाया गया तो बढ़ते तापमान के कारण जो बर्फ के बड़े बड़े गैल्सियर पिघल रहे हैं उनकी दर और तेज हो जाएगी। नतीजा यह निकलेगा की समस्त मानव जाति जल में विलीन हो जाएगी।

प्रदूषण कम करने के लिए कुछ कदम उठाने की अधिक आवश्यकता है जैसे कि प्लास्टिक का उपयोग कम करना, सूखे और गीले कचरे को वर्गीकृत करके रखना जिससे सूखा कचरा रिसाइकल के लिए चला जाए और गीले कचरे का खाद या और कोई उपयोग हो सके। इसके अलावा जल को दूषित न करें, जल में कूड़ा कचरा न फेंके तथा नदियों को स्वच्छ रखें। शाकाहारी भोजन लें जिससे उन जानवरों की मृत्यु दर कम हो जिनके मरने पर पर्यावरण में मीथेन जैसी हानिकारक गैसें उत्सर्जित होती हैं।
