A month or so after the colonists arrived, Tomochichi traveled to Savannah to see Oglethorpe. The Yamacraw Indians' chief and a significant character in the early history of Georgia was Tomochichi. He helped to foster friendly ties between the Creek (Muscogee) natives and British colonists by serving as a key mediator between them.
He and Oglethorpe drafted a deal allowing Oglethorpe to found the City of Savannah and Tomochichi to profit from trade with the Spanish through the work of interpreter Mary Musgrove.
